Successful use of three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy as adjuvant treatment for alveolar soft part sarcoma. A case report

Introduction: Alveolar soft part sarcoma is a very rare and aggressive type of sarcoma. Although its histology genetic characteristics have been identified, the benefits adjuvant radiotherapy for treatment are still being studied. Case presentation: In November 2007, 21-year-old woman presented with primary tumor in right thigh, histological immunohistochemical confirmation an alveolar sarcoma, which was totally resected December 2007. Also, large size mass suggested unfavorable evolution. Two years after first surgery, two metastatic tumors were detected lung, completely separately. later, patient had independent relapse events, five months apart: tight, adrenal gland, together tight. All successfully resected. June 2014, last local relapse, started because risk thigh amputation. At end treatment, patient’s general condition good. Currently, at age 34, monitored through periodic evaluations, showing disease regression stabilization. Conclusions: it known that radiation not only produces cytotoxic effects on target region but also induces immune system-mediated systemic response potential antimetastatic properties. Emerging radiobiological paradigms should be considered, particularly since they could explain some encouraging unexpected results, such as those described this case.
